We Recommend These Supplements For Our Patients

If you have had an animal in your life for more than a few hours, you have no doubt discovered that every dog and cat guardian you meet has strong opinions about what they feed their pets and what you should be feeding yours.  The good news is, animal guardians are doing a lot of thinking and talking and research about the best food, treats and supplements for their canine and feline charges.  The not-so-good news is that there is a huge amount of information to sift through, some of it reliable and accurate, some of it, well, not-so-good. 

Here’s a ray of hope-- in most cases, it is difficult for someone who is earnestly trying to do the right thing by their furry companions to actually break the animal.  That said, it is worth keeping in mind that unless you are very knowledgeable about canine and feline dietary needs, you may want to check with your holistic veterinarian before you put your animals on every wonderful new supplement you read or hear about.  The pet supplement industry has exploded into a billion-dollar industry, providing a wide variety of choices and the list is growing all the time.  There are responsible suppliers and opportunistic suppliers, so buyer, beware.  With that caveat, we would like to describe a few supplements that we carry here in the clinic and recommend for our patients on a regular basis.

We encourage you to do your own research and educate yourself about each product you consider giving to your animal companions.  Whenever possible, buy products that are specifically formulated for dogs and cats.  Don’t choose products based on price alone; cheap products may be made with lower-quality ingredients, higher-priced products may be more expensive because of marketing, advertising or distribution costs, things unrelated to the quality of the ingredients.  Read labels, and if the company isn’t a member of NASC, visit their website or call and ask about their quality oversight and customer support.
