Fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites (worms) and heartworms are some of the things we may need to prevent in our pets. Mountain dogs and cats are fairly safe from most of these parasites, as most parasites simply do not thrive in our dry environment with high UV radiation. Of course there are always exceptions:
-: If your dog travels with you to wetter climates and lower altitudes, you may wish to proactively treat them with a topical flea & tick prevention and you definitely need to make sure they are current on their heartworm preventative!
-: Some mountain areas seem to be more infested with ticks than others. If you live in an area with a high concentration of ticks, you may wish to use a topical treatment to keep them from attaching to your dog.
-: Giardia is an intestinal parasite that can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps and nausea. A common source of giardia is untreated, unfiltered water from lakes, rivers, ponds and streams. Some experts theorize that every animal (and most people) living in Colorado have some giardia in their systems but that it only becomes a health problem if and when the immune system is otherwise compromised. A simple fecal exam can diagnose giardia and it is treatable with medication.
- If your adopted pet is from another state, or a lower altitude here in Colorado, it is advisable to have a fecal exam done to make sure there are no intestinal parasites present. Puppies and dogs over the age of 6 months should also have a heartworm test before being started on preventative.
