Canine Massage
- what is it? Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, joints and lymphatic vessels.
- how does it work? Massage promotes relaxation, eases tight muscles and encourages good circulation for healing. Massage also assists the lymphatic system in cleansing the body and breaks up adhesions which in turn leads to better movement, in addition to many other benefits.
- does it hurt? When working out tight muscles or around injuries it it possible that massage can cause some discomfort in animals, just as in humans. Dogs seem to understand that massage is beneficial because they stay put during the treatment and most patients relax visibly.
- what does it treat? Massage works on many levels. It can be used to simply relax the dog and relieve stress. It promotes healing, and so treats injuries and assists with sickness. Massage helps with pain management, improves socialization and accustoms the dog to handling by a friendly stranger. We frequently recommend massage for our patients who have chronic pain or arthritis causing them to put extra pressure and workload on some parts of their bodies in order to favor weaker parts. We also recommend it for active or sporting dogs that have strained a muscle or tendon. Massage balances the dog emotionally and physically.
Canine massage is performed by expert, Paula Bindrich, by appointment at Harmony Animal Wellness.
