Dorn Therapy

  • what is it?  Dorn Therapy is a gentle manipulation of the joints of the body and the spinal column.  Dorn Therapy brings the entire skeleton back into proper alignment and enhances correct movement of the skeleton, improving the health of the whole body.
  • how does it work? If the body's foundation is misaligned, the entire structure shifts. The body can become imbalanced when one or more vertebrae are out of place.  If there is a misalignment of the spinal vertebrae the body will compensate, usually by tightening spinal muscles in order to prevent the errant vertebra from shifting further out of alignment.  A shifted vertebra can put pressure on nerves and blood vessels protruding from the spinal column and passing between the vertebrae.  Tightened spinal muscles, pressure on nerves and blocked blood vessels can cause pain and other health problems. Different leg lengths are another common reason for skeletal misalignment. Imbalances and slight differences in the length of each leg can be corrected by the gentle manipulation of each of the joints in the legs.

In Dorn Therapy, a misaligned vertebra is a blockage.  The therapy is directed at gently massaging the vertebrae back into proper position and relieving the blockages, along with associated pain and health problems.

The therapy additionally offers the advantages of classical massage, improving blood circulation and promoting relaxation of the musculature of the spinal column.  As we work the dog’s entire spine, from the neck (cervical) spine to the chest (thoracic) and back (lumbar and sacral), we stimulate many acupuncture points on the spinal meridian and nerve points along the spinal column.

  • does it hurt?  The treatment is primarily pleasant, but release of blockages can cause temporary discomfort. Human patients describe this pain as a good pain.  The vast majority of four-legged patients enjoy the therapy very much and relax completely during the treatment.
  • what does it treat?  Dorn Therapy can lessen the pain associated with arthritis, dysplasia, spondylosis and other degenerative joint conditions.  Animals with these conditions usually adopt an altered posture in order to lessen or avoid the pain.  The altered posture frequently leads to further problems such as misaligned vertebrae.

Older dogs have been helped to a better quality of life after treatment with Dorn Therapy, showing renewed interest in their environment and improved ability to climb stairs and jump to their favorite place on the sofa.

Dorn Therapy has also been used successfully on canine athletes, to remove blockages before they cause chronic injuries.
