VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE

• what is it?  Veterinary acupuncture is the gentle insertion of fine needles into the animal’s body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems. Veterinary acupuncture requires additional training beyond vet school, and has been specifically adapted to animals.

• how does it work?  Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”) through distinct channels that cover the body. Acupuncture adjusts the flow of qi in the body, leading it to areas where it is insufficient and draining it from areas where it is stuck.  In this way, acupuncture restores balance. Placement of needles at specific points also stimulates the body to release neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, to relieve pain and help the body heal itself.

• does it hurt?  No, not usually. Most animals tolerate acupuncture very well, barely noticing the insertion of the hair-thin needles and remaining very relaxed, or even sleeping, during treatment.

• what does it treat?  Acupuncture provides a sense of well-being, stimulates circulation, relieves pain, promotes normal organ function and increases rate of healing. It can be used to treat many diseases. Some of the things we commonly treat with acupuncture include arthritis, hip dysplasia and chronic pain.
